Hôtel Chevillon is located in the village of Grez-sur-Loing about 70 kilometres south of Paris and about nine kilometres from the town of Fontainebleau. The village has a population of about 1,300 and it was already attracting artists, writers, composers and musicians at the end of the 19th century.

The grants were available to visual artists for four to six months in years 1994 to 2019 and to writers for three to six months in years 2003 to 2018.

Hôtel Chevillon is owned by Stiftelsen Grez-sur-Loing, a Swedish foundation, which has rented out working space in the building to other foundations (such as the Finnish Cultural Foundation) since 1994. For more information about the place, visit the foundation's website at www.grez-stiftelsen.se.
