At its annual gala on February 27, 2009 the Finnish Cultural Foundation awarded 1 103 grants and three awards for outstanding achievement with a total sum of 20,3 million euro. Also, the projectTiedesirkus (=Science Circus) was launched, taking science centre activity to schools all over Finland. 

The Foundation has awarded special awards for outstanding achievement since 1941. The recipients of these awards, which are made on the Foundation's initiative, are private individuals. This year professor Eva-Mari Aro, professor Pentti Malaska and author Eeva Tikka each received an award of 30.000 euro for their eminent work promoting high quality Finnish national culture.
